Watford in the First World War -  War work and women

Civilians were also asked to volunteer to help the war effort at home, both men and women.  Men were asked to work in the munitions' factories which were set up following a shortage of shells.

Women were asked to consider doing work never done by them before.  This included working on the land where "the life if healthy and should tend towards improvement of physique".  Women were asked to do a number of jobs in Watford, delivering milk or post and serving customers in shops.
